Free Auto Repair Shop Software: What Actually Exists in 2026
July 18, 2026 · MyAutoShopPro Team
Here is the honest answer up front: there is no genuinely free, full shop management system worth running a real shop on. What exists is free pieces (invoicing, scheduling), free tiers with hard limits, and free trials of paid software. This article covers all three so you can stop searching and pick one.
We sell shop software, so you know our angle. But the first half of this article is about not paying us — or anyone.
What you can genuinely run for free
A spreadsheet. Google Sheets costs nothing and plenty of one-person shops run estimates and job tracking on it for years. The template is simple: one row per job, columns for customer, vehicle, status, parts cost, labor, total. It breaks when you hire your first writer or lose your first dispute over what a customer approved — a text thread and a spreadsheet row are not an authorization trail.
Free invoicing tools. Wave and Zoho Invoice’s free tier will produce professional invoices and take card payments (they make money on processing). No vehicle history, no estimates-to-RO flow, no inspections — but if invoicing is your only pain, this is the free fix.
A booking page. Google Business Profile gives you a free booking link, and calendar tools have free tiers. Appointments handled, nothing else.
The pattern: each free tool solves one slice. The thing none of them do is connect the slices — the estimate that becomes the repair order that becomes the invoice that texts the customer a payment link, with the vehicle’s history attached. That connection is the actual product you are searching for, and it is the part nobody gives away.
What “free” costs at a real shop
A shop writing 60 repair orders a month loses real money to disconnected tools: line items re-typed from estimate to invoice (and sometimes missed), approvals that live in text threads nobody can find during a dispute, no numbers on which jobs actually made money. One missed $40 line item a week is $2,000 a year — most of a year of entry-level shop software.
That is the honest trade. Free works when you are mobile, part-time, or doing a handful of jobs a month. Once a bay is full every day, “free” is the most expensive tier.
The cheapest real options
When the spreadsheet breaks, the bottom of the paid market looks like this (mid-2026, confirm current pricing with each vendor):
| Option | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| ARI | ~$30–40/mo | Budget option, popular with mobile mechanics; lighter on shop workflow |
| MyAutoShopPro | $99/mo flat | Full loop: estimates, DVI, ROs, invoicing, texting, unlimited users |
| Shopmonkey | ~$199/mo | Polished, easy to learn; per-user pricing on some tiers |
| Tekmetric | ~$399/mo | Deepest reporting; built for multi-bay volume shops |
The honest read: ARI is the real budget pick if you are mobile or part-time. Ours is the cheapest option built around the full shop loop — estimates customers approve from their phone, photo inspections, invoicing and payments, two-way texting — with no per-user fees, which is where the sub-$200 tier usually gets you. Above that, you are paying for reporting depth (here is when that is worth it).
Common questions
Is there a completely free version of Shopmonkey or Tekmetric? No. Both are demo-first paid products with no free tier (Tekmetric’s pricing breakdown here).
What is the best free software for a mobile mechanic? A spreadsheet plus Wave for invoicing covers a solo mobile operation genuinely well. The upgrade trigger is volume, not features.
How do free trials compare? Most incumbents make you book a sales demo first. We let you try the full product free for 14 days with no card and no call — partly as a pitch, partly because software you cannot try without a salesperson is telling you something.
